The Malaysian Preliminary Contest of the 13th Chinese Bridge – Chinese Proficiency Competition for Secondary Student

The Chinese Bridge –Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students is a large-scale international competition organized by Confucius Institute headquarters/Hanban to motivate the interests of secondary students in various countries to learn Chinese and enhance the world’s understanding of Chinese language and Chinese culture. This annual event has been held for 12 times. The Malaysian Preliminary Contest of the 13th Chinese Bridge 2020 will be hosted by the Kong Zi Institute University of Malaya. Due to the outbreak of Covid-19, the competition will be conducted online.

Theme: Fly high with Chinese
Date & Time: 08:30-17:00, June 28th 2020

Eligibility of Participants
To be eligible, the participant must meet the following requirements:
1. Current secondary school students in Malaysia
2. Age between 15 and 20
3. Non-Chinese nationalities
4. Neither born and raised in China
5. First language is NOT Chinese. Neither of the participant’s parents is a native Chinese speaker
6. Finalists to the competition last year in China may not participate

Competition Platform
The Preliminary Round for this competition will be held via a new online format, such as Zoom, Quizizz, Facebook

Contents
1. Knowledge Quiz on China and Chinese culture (20 minutes)
The quiz will be conducted on Quizizz
2. Chinese Speech (2 minutes)
Each participant is required to give a speech for no more than 2 minutes based on the given theme. The speech will be conducted on Zoom.
3. Questions & Answers (3 minutes)
After the speech, the participants will answer some questions from the judges.
4. Talent Show (1-4 minutes)
Each participant is required to present a talent show related to Chinese culture for no more than 4 minutes, including Chinese songs, music, dancing, opera, instrument, calligraphy, drawing, Martial Arts and so on. The participants need to submit a video of the talent show for judges’ evaluation.

Evaluation
1. Knowledge Quiz on China and Chinese culture (20pts)
40 one-choice questions, 0.5 pts for each question

2. Chinese Speech (20 pts)
– Speech Content (10 pts): the speech need to be closely related to the competition theme.
– Language accuracy (5pts)
– Language fluency (5pts): the judges will specially value fluent use of the language, clear pronunciation and the ease of expression.
3. Questions and Answers (30pts)
4. Talent Show (30pts)
– Content(10 pts)
– Skills(10 pts)
– Performance(10pts)
